Hi,

I don't get around much anymore, what with no car, age, et al. But for prospective adventurous birders, I think Chuckanut bay in winter might reveal some interesting species. Just offshore there are Chuckanut Island and Chuckanut Rock. They are refuges and off limits for landing. But the area would probably harbor such birds as oystercatchers, surfbirds, Rock Sandpipers, Long-tailed Duck, Harlequin Duck, and who knows what else. The shoreline includes a madrona type habitat that would have Hutton's Vireo. That area, along with nearby Mud Bay (upper most Chuckanut Bay), is under reported with regard to birds. If you aren't into hiking or boating, then nearby Lake Padden Park is always interesting. Lots of waterfowl of various species. They seem to travel between lakes and Mud Bay, probably influenced by the tide at Mud Bay. Of course my suggestion wouldn't fit into your itinerary, but is put out as a suggestion for others as well.

Hello all,

My wife and I will be taking a 2 day trip from Seattle up To Reifel in about
a week for birding/bird photography. We have birded up to Bellingham before
but never North of there. We always like to try new places too.

Our basic plan would be to leave Seattle early and maybe take some sunrise
shots at a nice place like the Semiahmoo Spit and then continue toward
Boundary Bay. On the second day we could make another stop before meeting a
group of people at Reifel at about 10:30am for the rest of the day.

So what places would be good birding right now besides 72nd St entrance to
Boundary Bay and Reifel?

Are the following places good right now?
Semiahmoo Spit
Anywhere on Point Roberts
Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal
Other places on Boundary Bay


Species we would like to see:
Snowy Owls and other Owl Species
Eagle
Gyrfalcon
Black Oystercatcher
Willet
Sandhill Cranes
Redhead
Cinnamon Teal
Red-throated Look
Pacific Loon
Pileated Woodpecker
Snow Bunting


Any suggestions and tips would be greatly appreciated. I have checked out
Ebird for some of the species and locations.
