Doug and Tweeters,

For brief information on 31 birding sites around Vancouver, BC-- including
3 of the 4 areas you mentioned-- check out the following webpage:
http://www.naturevancouver.ca/Birding_Birding_Sites . It includes brief
directions and a summary of birding opportunities in each of these areas.

A much more detailed birding guide is the "Birder's Guide to Vancouver and
the Lower Mainland" (240 pages), published in 2001. This book is
unfortunately out of print now, but you should be able to borrow a copy from
a library. The guide is currently being revised, and we hope that it will be
in print again within a year or so.

Black Oystercatchers and a single Willet are always present along the south
side of the Tsawwassen ferry jetty. Sandhill Cranes (7 or 8 of them) are
present all winter at the Reifel Bird Sanctuary. (Redhead and Cinnamon Teal
are very unlikely to be seen.) Reifel is the single best spot in winter to
tally up a long list of birds; 3 or 4 hours there should produce at least 50
species. Keep in mind that it's only open from 9 AM to 4 PM. Point Roberts
is also an excellent birding area for marine birds and forest birds, which
tends to be under-birded.

I would suggest skipping Semiahmoo Spit, so that you will have more time to
bird Point Roberts, Reifel, and Boundary Bay. Coastal Whatcom County is
deserving of a full day by itself, and I would suggest another day later in
the winter. Recommended areas there include Drayton Harbor (both the Blaine
side and the Semiahmoo Spit side), Birch Bay (including the State Park), and
the Lummi Flats. Lake Terrell is also worth visiting if it's not frozen.

Good luck and good birding!

Subject: [Tweeters] Birding Stop Suggestions Bellingham to Reifel

Hello all,

My wife and I will be taking a 2 day trip from Seattle up To Reifel in about
a week for birding/bird photography. We have birded up to Bellingham before
but never North of there. We always like to try new places too.

Our basic plan would be to leave Seattle early and maybe take some sunrise
shots at a nice place like the Semiahmoo Spit and then continue toward
Boundary Bay. On the second day we could make another stop before meeting a
group of people at Reifel at about 10:30am for the rest of the day.

So what places would be good birding right now besides 72nd St entrance to
Boundary Bay and Reifel?

Are the following places good right now?
Semiahmoo Spit
Anywhere on Point Roberts
Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal
Other places on Boundary Bay

Species we would like to see:
Snowy Owls and other Owl Species
Eagle
Gyrfalcon
Black Oystercatcher
Willet
Sandhill Cranes
Redhead
Cinnamon Teal
Red-throated Look
Pacific Loon
Pileated Woodpecker
Snow Bunting

Any suggestions and tips would be greatly appreciated. I have checked out
Ebird for some of the species and locations.

Thanks
Doug Schurman
NE Seattle
