Tweeters,

Tina and I had excellent bird karma today in Lewis County. We headed south
to check out some of the excellent birds reported in the Centralia and
Chehalis area. We found:

. White-Throated Sparrow - Goodrich Road location reported by Ken
Knittle and others

. Thayer's Gull - Wagner Road location reported by Michael Hobbs

. Western Gull - Wagner Road

. Peregrine Falcon - Corner of Goodrich Road and Wagner Road

. Herring Gull - Fort Borst Lake Park

. Canvasback - in the slough off Shoreline Drive by the old STP in
Chehalis

. Red-Throated Loon - off Airport Road in the small horseshoe lake
just north of the Chehalis airport runway. We viewed the bird from the dike
access that is closed by a cable. This lake is behind the Home Depot and
may also be visible from there.

The Red-Throated Loon was an immature bird. It was actively diving. The
bill was slender and pointed slightly upward. The white on its face was
more limited than on an adult. The forehead and crown were grey with an
indistinct border with the white on the face. The border on the neck was
very indistinct and unpatterned. When facing us, it showed a small brick
red patch on the throat. The back was a battleship grey and faintly
speckled. This is a most interesting bird and a long ways from its normal
habitat.

Good birding!

Rick
