possible reason: herons can be seen year-round, easily found almost
everywhere in the lowlands where there is open water and reeds... most of
the other suggested birds are either not easily found (by your average
person who isn't a tweeter twitcher), or not abundant, or both...

though, if this theory were correct, why they'd move from the goldfinch is
beyond me.
