I think my point was, we're dealing with legislators. They think the guy
sitting next to them is "an old bird" or a "loon." Or that something has
to be done with those nuisance Terns in Bellingham! Other than that they
have no clue.
Several states have endemics, Michigan - Kirtland Warbler; State Bird -
Robin. California - Yellow-billed Magpie, Island Scrub Jay, California
Gnatcatcher; State Bird - California "Valley" Quail.
Other states: Alabama - Yellowhammer ; Delaware - Blue Hen Chicken; Rhode
Island - Rhode Island Red; South Dakota -Ring-necked Pheasant (an Introduced
Game Bird.)
And then they have to embellish: South Carolina - "Great" Carolina Wren, as
though theirs is somewhat better than the Carolina Wren seen the rest of the
Eastern US. What makes anyone think that real birders had any input in
these decisions.
I agree that GBH is a bad choice. Good luck getting a more appropriate
option. Personally, I'd rather have them fixing the budget.
