I realize that the N. Spotted Owl would not be the traditional type of state bird. So I'll be glad to go along with the Steller's Jay. It is a handsome bird and full of personality. It also is widespread. The obvious problem with the state of Washington, landscape-wise, is that it should be two different states: east and west. Then the east can have the meadowlark or house wren as their state bird, for example (or some other dust-loving species); while we in the lushly vegetated west can choose among our species, specialized for our ecosystem.
