Hi Tweets,
I haven't seen anyone mention yet this year that the herons are back on the nests at the Kenmore Heronry behind the Kenmore Park & Ride, so I thought it was worth a post.
They are there!
I was on my way to Swamp Creek Park this afternoon, about 3:45, and stopped at the light across from the police station. Looked up to see the trees behind solidly dotted with large birds and large nests, so I diverted my route to take a look. I didn't do an official count, but there were easily at least 20 nests being covered by one or two birds each.
I ran into Linda Phillips at Swamp Creek and she mentioned that she'd been by the heronry on Monday and there were no birds then. I don't know if they just moved in this week (seems they've been there earlier in previous years) but they were actively settling in today, carrying in new sticks, setting up house.
If you haven't seen this rookery, it's worth a visit.
And if you stay until dusk, for the time being anyway, you can still experience the evening migration of the crows, which is its own very fascinating (and Hitchcockian) bird experience!
Happy birding,
