Hi Tweets,

It was eerie this morning (2-12-11), what with a strong east wind
blowing and almost as many birders as species in Edmonds. Were they
brought in on this unusual easterly? At least it wasn't raining. In
addition to the five loons we saw this morning from the pier, Dennis
Duffy saw at least 27 Pacific Loons north of the ferry dock yesterday.

Killdeer numbers in the marsh are climbing a bit but who knows where
the Great Blue Herons are. Ted Peterson mentioned that they are
already being seen at the Kenmore heronry. There is no sign yet that
they will return this year to the small heronry on the south side of
the marsh. Yesterday morning they had good variety at the marsh,
including Hermit Thrush, both chickadees, both kinglets, Downy
Woodpecker, Marsh Wren, and Fox and Golden-crowned Sparrows, in
addition to the same birds we saw this morning. The lone Lincoln's
was working the lawn patches around the tennis courts.

A pair of Pileated Woodpeckers were loudly pounding at the hatchery
this morning. No ducks were seen at all in the ponds on the south
side of the marsh, as viewed from the Point Edwards public path.
Nineteen ducks (3 species) were populating the small retention pond
at the end of that path, however.
