Subject: [Tweeters] Crow Foraging Behavior

Hi Tweeters,

I observed an interesting crow behavior recently in a nearby supermarket
parking lot, and wondered if others have noted this.

While sitting in my car, I observed the crow picking at a discarded apple
core. Interestingly, the crow pried off pieces of pulp and flicked them off
its beak several times, then carefully picked out a seed and ate it. I
watched the crow do this several times before several people walking by
spooked it and it flew away, carrying the apple core with it.

I suppose that seeds have more nutritional and energy value than pulp, but I
was still somewhat surprised to see the crow discard the pulp rather than
eat both pulp and seed. I wondered if this could be a learned preference,
an individual preference, or a common behavior simply maximizing caloric
intake.

Cheers,
