Got out early to look for owls this morning before heading for a group
outing. Slick frosty pavement! No luck with Short-eared but did find Barn
and Great Horned on the River S Unit at Ridgefield NWR. After one quick
loop in mostly early light I noticed Tree Swallows moving through near the
beginning of the loop where they have not been this winter. Missed my group
in Vancouver so headed up Lower River Road to Post Office Lake where I had
43 species in just over an hour. More swallows than have been at River S
with at least 250 Tree Swallows and 65 Barn Swallows (letting Scott know
ahead of GBBC results!) Eventually wound up at Steigerwald Lake NWR where
there were no swallows, a surprise knowing some had been seen earlier this
winter/spring. Wood Duck and Canvasback found at both refuges.
