Today, Susan and I headed up into Klickitat County hoping for some early migrant birds, which we did not find. We did enjoy semi-cloudy weather and some early Spring wildflowers along with the wintering birds. As we passed Skamania Landing we noted two adult BALD EAGLES perched in the nest tree east of that community. So I wasn't surprised when we only saw three BALD EAGLES at the mouth of the Klickitat River where there were forty just two weeks ago. We then drove up Old Highway 8 to Balch Road where we quickly found one ACORN WOODPECKER on the granary tree south of the highway. It was nice to see that they are still here after all of the reports of wandering Acorn Woodpeckers last fall. The Catherine Creek Nature Preserve had few birds but a nice bloom of Grass Widow, Star Flowers and a few endemic purple flowering Columbia Lomatium. From the lowest spot along the trail south of Old Highway 14 we spotted a RED-NECKED GREBE in the Columbia River. Wilson Cady
