Birders,

I am forwarding a summary of the Ladner Christmas Bird Count from Jude
Grass, the compiler. This count is mostly in British Columbia, but one of
the sectors (Point Roberts) is in Washington. It has been held almost every
year since 1957.

In recent years, only two CBCs have topped the Canadian counts in number of
species-- Ladner and Victoria, BC. This year, Victoria was able to find
only 140 species, so it looks like Ladner will be the winner. It should be
pointed out that Victoria was handicapped by very strong winds, but Ladner
also had less than ideal (windy) weather, although not as bad as Victoria's.
Both counts have exceeded 150 species a number of times in the past.

Subject: [bcvanbirds] Ladner Christmas Bird Count Report

The Ladner BC/Washington Christmas Bird Count was held on Monday December 27
and it was a very successful count with 143 species seen on count day. Two
new species were added to the count - Northern Hawk Owl and a Northern
Mockingbird. Other notable species seen on count day that are not regularly
seen (therefore needing a Rare Bird sighting form) included Spotted
Sandpiper, White-throated Sparrow, & Harris's Sparrow. Unfortunately the
Yellow-breasted Chat which had been seen on the CWS property in Delta in
early December has not be seen for a couple of weeks now.

We also recorded a 7 owl day (species that is.Barn Owl, Great Horned Owl,
Barred Owl, Long-eared Owl, Short-eared Owl, Northern Saw-whet Owl and the
Northern Hawk Owl.) Too bad there wasn't a Snowy Owl this year.. The Point
Roberts Team did an excellent job or recording the Common Murres, Pigeon
Guillemots, Marbled Murrelets and Ancient Murrelets - which are sometimes
hard to get on count day.

While I have not been able to get all the area totals into a spread sheet
yet, it looks like we will have record numbers of Eurasian Collared Doves -
over 100, and probably a number of other species will be high counts such
as Anna's Hummingbirds.

While the weather was cloudy, windy in the morning (and a very high tide on
Boundary Bay) and raining and windy in the afternoon a record number of
birders in the field (over 80) and a number of feeder watchers had a great
day of birding.

Thanks to everyone who participated.
