Tweeters,

I stopped at Browns Point this afternoon and found a pair of MARBLED
MURRELETS, a single PIGEON GUILLEMOT and at least 5 - 6 or more RHINOCEROS
AUKLETS.
Seems that I started the year of right this morning, with a VARIED THRUSH as
my first bird, when I was hanging out the hummingbird feeder. The AMERICAN
CROWS and BAND-TAILED PIGEONS came in second and third for a change. The
Varied Thrush has only one tail feather. It must have had a close encounter
with Mr. Cooper! The resident adult COOPER'S HAWK came in as # 8 for the
year. There were quite a few good birds along the waterfront south of the
marina below the Cliff House. A single SPOTTED SANDPIPER, a flock of LEAST
SANDPIPERS with one DUNLIN and a group of KILLDEER. a very skittish flock of
GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROWS included a single WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW. ..and yes,
I did look for a Harris Sparrow without success! Also saw at least two FOX
SPARROWS; a BROWN CREEPER was unexpected.
It was interesting to see a SONG SPARROW foraging in the mud with the LEAST
SANDPIPERS. It is certainly larger than the sandpipers. I ended the day with
63 species for the new year. Not a bad start, considering that I did not
venture very far afield.

Wishing everyone a very happy New Year with lots of great birds!
