Wow, I just saw a Yellow-rumped Warbler at the suet in the back yard, first winter sighting in 19 years. Yellow-rumps have always been one of the least common warblers here, even though they are perhaps the most common overall in the state. Perhaps they don't like this wooded habitat so much or, as I have written before, they tend to be most common nearer water. This one is hanging around the feeder as if it has discovered a lifeline, and a few minutes ago it and one of the "resident" Townsend's were feeding at it together. Now that's a way to start the year! A Ruby-crowned Kinglet has visited the same suet several times today, another unusual visitor. The birds definitely eat more suet during cold weather. Quick energy from fat.
