Hi Tweeters,

MaryFrances Mathis and I spent some time birding in the Willow Grove area
west of Longview this morning (1/3/11) with the highlight being an adult
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK. If you follow Willow Grove Road along the Columbia
River until just before it loops back toward Coal Creek Slough, there will
be a small pond on the north side surrounded by trees. The hawk was in these
trees today.
Wonderful raptor action along Coal Creek Slough included male and female
PEREGRINE FALCONS perched together in the same tree scoped in great light
until a nearby RED-TAILED HAWK lumbered over them to dislodge them from
their post. The hawk was no match for the now air-borne falcons who
dive-bombed it individually and in tandem with interesting
vocalizations until it vacated the area. Spectacular!

After an early afternoon run with moderate success to try for some Clark
County ducks we returned to Cowlitz and spent a little time in the Woodland
Bottoms. The GREATER SCAUP flock was in a long ribbon stretching nearly from
Whalen Road to Caples Road, but with limited time we still managed to find 2
WHITE -WINGED SCOTERS toward the north end of the flock.
I belive a good time was had by all.
