i've been following the "mass bird deaths" (and now, the "mass animal
deaths") stories with a great deal of interest for the past few weeks.
this phenomenon is much more widespread and commonly reported than i
originally realized. here's a map describing the location of these

interestingly, humans -- being what we are -- give our attention to
massive die-offs that occur among animals with huge populations,
whereas most of us conveniently ignore the extinction of hundreds of
species (most of which are going extinct due to human causes such as
habitat destruction):
