The plot thickens! After reading John Tubbs e-mail on GOLDEN-CROWNED
KINGLETS this afternoon, my wife asked me to identify a bird in our
backyard. It was on the trunk of one of the large pine trees in an area of
the yard away from our feeders. I fully expected to see a Brown Creeper, but
imagine my surprise when I noticed a yellow racing stripe across the head!
It was part of a group of at least 8 Golden-crowned Kinglets and likely
more, feeding on the ground. There was a constant coming and going, with
some of them flying back into the trees, with others dropping back onto the
ground. It made it difficult to get an accurate count. I tried to determine
what they were feeding on through binoculars, but was unable to. It was
something very small.
Feeding with them, was a single DARK-EYED JUNCO and a BEWICK'S WREN. To my
surprise, they were joined first by a male TOWNSEND'S WARBLER and then by a
female.

Good Birding!
