On the morning of January 2 in clear, calm, but cold conditions, I
encountered two RUBY-CROWNED Kinglets (not golden-crowned) ground-feeding right at
my feet, at the edge of the road at the Chambers Creek Dam and bridge in
Steilacoom. They were remarkably tame, and walking slowly, I was able to
pass by them about two feet away without flushing them or apparently bothering
them at all. As I recall, this may have been the day after a storm.

Couldn't get photos, as I had been using one of those notorious "honking
(expletive deleted) big lenses" to photograph a gang of crows mobbing an
eagle who was eating a fish carcass, and so could not focus on the little
kinglets up close. Art Morris, the guru of bird photographers, advises
always carrying a second camera with a short zoom lens while working with big
long lenses, as one never knows when something interesting may happen at
close hand for which a short lens is needed.

Wish I had heeded his advice.
