Tonight, at about 7 PM, I heard a long-eared owl give it's more typical scream twice from the same area along Geiren Creek near Graysmarsh Farm that this one or another called a couple of weeks ago.

Also, while walking along Holland Road this afternoon, a pair of pileated woodpeckers flushed from a wind-snapped conifer trunk they were both working on. Surely mid-January is early for nest excavation, but then it is warm for the season. Who would have thought that last week at this time?
