I wonder if the kinglet behavior has less to do with the kinglets' response
to weather and more to do with insect response. After a long cold period,
and then wind and rain, perhaps the insects on leaves in trees have become
scarce, either eaten by hungry birds, killed, or gotten blown away. The
warmer ground as the days are getting longer may have prompted dormant
insects to start moving or eggs to hatch.
