Hi Andy and Tweets,

If you ignore the colors of gray seen, taking into account the
lighting problems that frequently give us an inaccurate sense of
color, I wonder if this "medium-size" raptor with vertical streaks, a
white supercilium and pointed wings, could be a juvenile Peregrine?
The location fits - Peregrines do perch near there, and certainly hunt
in the flats north of there.

I have seen Merlins in the area of Andy's sighting, but I wouldn't
call them medium-size.

Once again, it appears that a photo or 2 would have helped. Maybe if
you [Andy] look at lots of falcon photos, you'll see one that strikes
you with it's similarity to the sense of the bird that remains in your
mind (and which, I must say, is likely to change as you get responses
and look at photos!).

Good luck - maybe there will be a similar sighting in the next few
days...
