Yesterday I was at Ridgefield NWR, and I saw a bittern across a small canal actively feeding, so I stopped to observe, photograph him/her. After a few minutes he/she actually swam across the canal, and walked up the bank to within 3 feet of my car and continued feeding. The posting last week about a heron swimming came to mind. This bird did not wade, he/she swam. Although I couldn't see the feet under the water, the motions were not of a wading bird, but a paddling one. I've never seen anything like it before. Also it seemed like a very small bittern. It had glow-in-the-dark neon green/yellow legs, and did the stick-the-neck-up-in-the-air behavior. It was enjoyable to watch. I'm not sure yet, if I got any decent photos. Judi L. Baker
