Tom Mansfield and I birded Cowlitz County starting at Abernathy Road with a Northern Pygmy-Owl tooting at dawn in the rain. Next to Willow Grove we found 2 Purple Fiinches eating buds on a large bush and a Red-shouldered Hawk out in the middle of the fields west from the last place seen and not too far from the western end of Willow Grove Road. A stop in Sacajawea Park in Longview in the muddy red water was a Long-tailed Duck. On to Woodland Bottoms where we had 1 Turkey Vulture, 1 heard Dunlin, 2 Cooper's Hawks, 1 Rough-legged Hawk, many Great Egrets, lots of Sandhill Cranes, and 1 Great Horned Owl. Ridgefield NWR did not have anything unusual so we finished the day birding Vancouver Lake area where we had 700+ Snow Geese, 2 Red-breasted Mergansers (at the Flushing Channel), 1 Coom Loon on the Columbia River, 1 Cooper's Hawk and 1 Pileated Woodpecker.
