They did indeed return, on April 8 as a matter of fact, and the Port of Bellingham's off-season measures have encouraged them to nest elsewhere. There have been witnesses to the Port's additional efforts to discourage nesting by having their security vehicles drive into any flocks that might try to establish a foothold. I contacted federal and state wildlife about this obvious harassment of migratory birds but no one wants to do anything about it.

It's a sad situation and the terns are around, but we can't find any evidence of nesting.

Did the Caspian terns return to the site of last year's nesting colony in Bellingham? I recall reading here that the Port of Bellingham was taking active measures this spring to discourage their return.
