What a marvelous day for the Fourth of July Holiday! Carole and I enjoyed
Tacoma's Freedomfair Air Show at Ruston Way from across the water at Browns
Point this afternoon. It was not only marvelous, but also marbled! I counted
a total of 12 *Marbled Murrelets** *and possibly two more further out, at
times feeding less than 50 yards of the beach at the lighthouse with an
extremely low tide, despite heavy boat traffic and screaming jets and kids!
This is my personal best high count at one location. They seemed to be all
in pairs and I had excellent looks at them without a scope.
I also noted a constant flow of *Caspian Terns* in and out of the Port of
Tacoma. At times they were diving right of the lighthouse. Though small in
numbers, there appears to be an active nesting colony remaining at the Port.
Does anybody know it's location?
The lifetime moment was quite different today: as I was watching the WWII
B-25 Mitchell bomber going through its paces. I had the bomber and a Caspian
Tern in my binoculars at the same time. This against the backdrop of the
gorgeous, snow capped mountains of the Olympic Range, a clear blue sky and
the waters of the Puget Sound below! What a sight!
Now we also watched a *Harrier*, but since it was not a Northern, we will
not talk about it!
