Subject: [Tweeters] Seattle Audubon Pelagic Birding class
Date: Jul 5 18:41:42 2011
From: Michael Donahue - bfalbatross at gmail.com

Attention Landlubbers!

I?m teaching a Pelagic Birding class in Seattle on August 1 and 8. Here?s a
chance to crack open those pages in the field guides that you never have
reason to look at! Space is available in the lecture-only portion of the
class as well as on the August 14 field trip.

We?ve had a good diversity of species offshore so far this year: Laysan
Albatross on all three trips, South Polar Skuas and out of season
Long-tailed Jaegers in June, and oh yeah, a Short-tailed Albatross!

A complete description of the class and information on registration is
below. In the words of Steve Howell, ?Why be afraid of 2/3 of the planet??

*Pelagic Birding*

The west coast of North America offers some of the best seabirding anywhere
in the world. The rich waters 20-40 miles offshore support a diversity of
species?albatrosses, storm petrels, shearwaters and jaegers?that spend much
of the year in the waters far offshore at the edge of the continental shelf.
If you?ve heard about pelagic birding but wasn?t sure what was involved,
this class will demystify it for you.

The class will cover the diversity of seabirds that are found offshore,
focusing on natural history and identification, as well as how to prepare
for a pelagic trip.

Instructor: Mike Donahue, pelagic tour spotter

When: August 1 and August 8

Classes will be held 7-9 p.m.

Location: Douglas Classroom, Center for Urban Horticulture

Cost of class: $45 members, $60 nonmembers

To register for the class call Seattle Audubon at: 206-523-4483.

Optional field trip: Westport Seabirds has set aside 10 spaces for the class
on their August 14 trip. The SAS office will not collect registration for
the field trip. Contact Mike Donahue directly at 206-290-8294 or
bfalbatross at gmail.com if you would like to go with the class on August 14.
Cost, departure information, and dates of other trips are at
www.westportseabirds.com.
