Just an update on the situation as of yesterday ... While you can drive to the guard station at the pass, you can NOT drive towards Slate Peak. Neither can you drive to the Meadows CG. Not for several weeks. The road going down to towards the Chancellor trailhead is driveable for another mile or so.

If you go, bring snow shoes.

The road is open. I drove up to the pass early Saturday morning and went to the 17-mile mark and the guard station/campground (still under 6' of snow). The road is actually open another 6 miles to Slate Creek, but looks pretty gnarly, for lack of a better word. Tons of burned timber and pretty eerie up there.

Not a whole lot of bird action but I did encounter a herd of mountain goats (30 individuals with a bunch of kids) down pretty low, working a possible natural salt/mineral lick. They had denuded the slope to get to whatever it was.
