My wife and I birded Reecer Creek and Forest Service Road 35 North of
Ellendburg yesterday. We stopped about one quarter of a mile above the
creek where the road looked down on the South slope in the midst of
Ponderosa Pine with a densely vegetated understory and spent time sorting
out the many species there. While there we heard a Sooty/Dusky Grouse give
its whoompf! call twice. I have listened to Sooty Grouse in W.WA. many
times but have no experience with Dusky and am not sure which species this
was. The Kittitas Co list shows both species and Tweit et. al. Birds of
Washington shows both species E of the Cascades. Any help regarding the
likelyhood of this species in this habitat would be appreciated.
We also found a female Black Backed Woodpecker in a burn further up the
road. There are two major burns between Reecer creek and the turn off to
Liom Rock. The first one shows extensive evidence of woodpecker activity,
the second one doesn't. The bird was in the first one.
