I was in Portland yesterday and had a chance to
stop by Ridgefield Refuge. As has been reported
often there are a startling number of White
Pelicans there. My best count was +/- 50. The
birds were in two lakes just at the very Southern
tip of the loop drive just before it turns back
east again (sorry I do not have the map with me
and do not recall the names of the lakes. During
the perhaps 30 minutes that I was there, a number
of birds flew from the larger lake to the east
over to the dryer/smaller lake to the west across
the road where we were all parked. I think the
high count there was 35+. From that spot you
could just see the tops of the heads of more birds
on the larger lake. When I drove out I stopped
and scanned that larger lake and saw at least
another 12-15 birds there. The numbers are
approximate because many of the birds were jumbled
together and/or hidden behind plants.

Not much else seen of note except perhaps the most
Kestrels I have seen in a while. Three on the
Refuge and 4 additional birds (all on telephone
wires) in the farmland areas in the vicinity.
Those and three Turkey Vultures were the only
raptors seen.
