Protection Island is an island in Puget Sound that is a 400 acre National
Wildlife Refuge at the mouth of Discovery Bay about 7 miles west of Port
Townsend. It is the breeding area for over 70% of the seabirds nesting in Puget
Sound, including some 30 pairs of Tufted Puffins, 20,000 pairs of
Rhinoceros Auklets, and 5000 pairs of Glaucous-winged Gulls.
