This morning, I led a Black Hills Audubon field trip to Elma Hills, which is located a few miles northwest of Elma in eastern Grays Harbor County. We tallied 51 species, with a Gray Jay seen at low elevation in a valley bottom being our best find. Other nice observations included 4 Red-breasted Sapsuckers; plenty of singing Wilson's Warblers, Black-headed Grosbeaks, and Warbling Vireos; a Red-tailed Hawk flying overhead carrying a snake (probably a garter snake); a couple of Olive-sided Flycatchers; and 15-20 Band-tailed Pigeons passing through over the course of the morning. Alas, no Mountain Quail for us.
