Subject: [Tweeters] Fire News from the Huachucas in Arizona

From: Mary Ann Chapman - machapman at fanfarehouse.com

I just received this information from Polly Rothstein, who lives in
New York and is a mutual friend of Ben and Linda Feltner and Bob
Behrstock. I expect to be getting updates and will post here if
anyone is interested. I'm particularly concerned about Ben, who has
his mammoth collection of bird books and has been in poor health for
several years. And of course, both Linda and Bob have their life's
work in their homes in the area. I don't know the others mentioned
below, but perhaps some of you do. Adrienne is Bob's ex. I don't
know what email list this post is from. I hadn't even heard about
the fire before I got this email from Polly.

>Hi, birders,
>
>As you might expect, there is very little solid information about
>who and what has been affected by the fire. I spoke with Bob
>Behrstock just now, and have had word from others, but please be
>aware this information may be inaccurate. At least 40 structures
>have been damaged or destroyed by the Monument fire at the south end
>of the Huachucas. Ash Canyon was particularly hard hit yesterday
>afternoon. Bob Behrstock said his house (Pickett Lane in Ash Canyon)
>was damaged by the fire, is still standing, but may suffer more
>damage as there are still a lot of hot embers and the winds have
>picked up again. Turkey Track Road homes were right in the path of
>the fire, so it is assumed that Mary Jo's place was affected, but as
>just posted by Phillip Kline, Mary Jo herself is safe.
>
>Other birders, some of them who post here, have been evacuated,
>including Pete Sockness, Ted Mouras (home damaged, but not
>seriously), and Robert Wiessler--all these folks have found places
>to stay for the time being. The area just south of Miller Canyon
>Road is now being evacuated, affecting the following birders--Kerrie
>Kirkpatrick, Ben & Linda Feltner, and Tony Battiste. I assume the
>Miller Canyon area in general is now under evacuation orders, and
>this affects Beatty's Orchard and another host of birders too
>numerous to list here. As Mary Jo is at Christie Van Cleve in Miller
>Canyon, they may have to leave sometime today.
>
>No flames are visible yet along the Hunter Canyon Ridge, but it is
>clearly burning fast on areas to the immediate south (Hunter and
>Stump Canyons). Sorry to post such vague and generally bad news, but
>that appears to be the situation at present.
>
>Cheers, Erika Wilson (Sierra Vista, AZ)
