Subject: [Tweeters] Hermit Warblers in Capitol Forest

Steve Caldwell and I found Hermit Warblers after some effort in the Capitol
Forest today. It was windy at times and alternatively sunny and rainy so
for the most part the Hermits were hermit like and silent. We came in the
Delphi entrance and actually heard one Hermit Warbler fairly low but didn't
get a definitive sense of the song or any visual. After searching for an
hour or so after that we heard and saw two near the top of Capitol Peak, and
watched them copulating for a moment. There were a couple of Hammond's
Flycatchers singing and then perched nicely together at the same spot. The
Wilson's Warblers didn't care about the poor weather and were belting it out
at just about every stop. We heard a Sooty Grouse between Larch Mtn and
Capitol Peak. On the way back down we heard two or three more Hermits at
several locations. A MacGillivray's Warbler one at one of the lower clear
cut edges.

This was one of those nemesis birds that I've never seen until finally going
to the Capitol Forest. I've seen hybrids before and it was nice at last to
see one that appears to be the real deal as well as having the proper song.
