Hey tweets, for the past several days, the Fill has been hanging
around backstage, getting ready for the big spring show. There's a lot
to prepare, you know: the costumes, the music, the choreography, even
the players, some of whom have been delayed by bad weather. Today,
though, it all came together as the Fill, like some vaudevillian MC,
introduced one bird after another, each to do its star turn.

First were the Brewer's Blackbirds, strutting their stuff on the field
by the helipad. Next came the Western Meadowlark, with an aria as
bright and effortless as the sunshine, followed by a chorus of
Virginia Rails tapping their percussive rhythms - not all music is
sweet-sounding though it is all quite beautiful. The Buffleheads in
the Lagoon did their head-bobbing dance, periodically rising off the
water to flash their red feet like male can-can dancers to an audience
of females that seemed more interested in the food than in the frolic.
Best of all were two swallows, a TREE and a VIOLET-GREEN, performing
their aerobatics over the curly willow tree south of Main Pond.

Spring is here at last, and I for one am glad to wave goodbye to the
winter, at least for now. - Connie, Seattle
