I have been confused by pronunciation on numerous occasions, and I am
guessing that I am not the only one. Much of my original birding experience
came from my own investigations - walking around the river next to my
undergraduate college with a bird guide. I usually never had advanced
birders there to pronounce names properly for me. Whenever I am birding
with a more advanced birder, I usually still ask how he or she pronounces
particular names - and I often get contradictory advice from different
people. I am tempted to learn IPA, for no other reason than to make notes
about bird names for myself...
