Yesterday after school, I went to Borst Park (Harrison St exit at
Centralia) to eat my lunch, and parked by the "lake." The parking
stip is separated from the water only by a narrow paved path and a row
of fence posts (no fence)--there to keep cars from driving into the
lake, I suspect.

But perched on each of the 20 posts immediately in front of the parking
strip were gulls--male and female--and on the path and lake edge were 45
plus more! The amazing thing to me was that when I drove up, not a bird
moved. Later when the fishermen returned to the car parked beside mine,
no birds moved either. By then, we had been visited by a white goose,
three mallards, and an all black duck who did take exception to the
human element and slide away.

(I won't say what species the gulls, goose, and black ducks were because
someone is sure to tell me I'm wrong.)

After finishing my lunch, I drove home via I-5 and Hwy 508. As I drove
near the short area where the Newaukum comes close to the highway, a
red-tailed hawk dropped to the narrow strip of grass and grabbed a
rodent!

Exciting day,

Darlene
