I think the best attitude to take about pronouncing names is "tomayto-tomahto." (Remember the old song "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off," or maybe that's not the official name.) Americans pronounce all kinds of words differently in different regions. People laugh at me, coming from the Midwest, when I pronounce words such as "roof" and "hoof" with the softer U of "could" instead of the harder U of "moo." I don't care how people say "plover," "pileated," etc., just as long as I can see the bird they're seeing.
