Interjecting my two (2) cents worth here. I had the privilege of taking a
botany class from a very well respected professor while in college. With no
Latin language in my background, I struggled to properly pronounce the
scientific names of the plants because I wanted to be "right". One day on a
field trip, I approached the instructor and asked if he would pronounce the
name of a plant for me. He told me to pronounce it first. Puzzled, I did.
He smiled. My heart sunk, I thought I had so totally screwed up the
pronunciation that he was amused. I asked him what was wrong; he responded
with this little bit of advice: it's hard to take the accent out of a
southerner and it's hard to change who you are, so as long as your audience
understands what you are talking about, you have pronounced it correctly!
Don't sweat the small stuff. Live and let live.

I guess I have been "wrong" all my life because I pronounce it "Ploh-ver".
