Hey tweets, the Fill was surpassingly beautiful this morning, with
wisps of fog softening the sunlight as it shown through the trees at
dawn. Two SAVANNAH SPARROWS were foraging near the Lone Pine Tree, and
an additional Savannah was scrabbling in the grass near SW Pond. These
are the FOY for me. A PEREGRINE rocketing through the fields
suppressed the birds' activities, but only for a short while. I'm not
even sure all the Blackbirds even noticed, they were so busy defending
their cattail turfs. On the lake, 95+ COMMON MERGANSERS sailed into
the Cove - I don't ever remember seeing such a large raft of them
before. The COMMON TEAL was tucked up under the willows on the west
side of Main Pond. He was snoozing with two other Green-winged Teals,
a male and a female. TREE SWALLOWS have begun to lay claim to the nest
holes in the teeny snag on SW Pond. The swallows always seem to choose
these holes first; later-comers must settle for the human-made nest
boxes scattered throughout the South and North Blue Forests. Lastest-
comers of all must make do with ramshackle houses that have seen
better days. I remember one little male two years ago stuck with a
house that was tipped over so far, any egg laid in it would have
rolled right out again. Undismayed by the poor quality of his house,
the male perched atop the roof, singing for all he was worth. I don't
think he ever scored, however. - Connie, Seattle
