I would like to thank everybody who responded to my request for information
on the Mountain Beaver aka Aplondontia. Wow, what a wonderful group we have!
The amount of information coming from all of you is overwhelming! The last
24 hours have been most educational for me. I learned so much about this
unusual rodent. I did not know existed. In the back of my mind though, I did
recall reading an article on the Mountain Beaver a while back, either on
Tweeters or the Seattle Times and yes, not all was very complimentary.
I have been a lifelong birder and thought that I was at least somewhat
familiar with most mammals. This one was new and a "lifer" for me! Too bad
that I do not keep a mammal life list. I was a bit surprised, that the
Barred Owl in the cedar right above the Mountain Beaver did not pounce on
it. As somebody stated, it is likely a common prey item for owls in
Discovery Park. The owl was probably preoccupied keeping an eye on us.
I apologize for having started this off subject thread, but it is an owl
prey item. Hope everybody enjoyed it!

Cheers,
