Tweets,

18 of us enjoyed a great walk and bird survey at Nisqually on Wednesday.
The weather was nice and we covered some areas usually closed to the public.

Highlights of the day included finding the GREAT HORNED OWL nest hole and
seeing both an adult and two chicks. This years nest is quite a way from
last year's nest and much more difficult to find. Right now the best way to
find the nest is to look for all the people. Directions: Take the boardwalk
along the Nisqually River side and go about 75 yards past the riparian
cutoff and look back inside the boardwalk. The nest is in a hole in the left
trunk of a big leaf maple about 20 feet up. Look for the whitewash on the
tree. The hole faces right quartering toward the trail. The tree is about
25 yards into the woods.

Other highlights included our first RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD and RAVEN of the
year.

Waterfowl numbers continue to dwindle but the quality is still high. The
BROWN CREEPER nest near the start of the new dike is active and will bear
watching in the coming weeks. Spring migrants continue to be no shows but
that should change soon. The only warblers seem were YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS
and DUNLIN and KILLDEER were the only shorebirds seen.

We did spot the GREAT EGRET out in the restoration area and had an AMERICAN
BITTERN inside the boardwalk on the way to the twin barns.

All told we had 64 species for the day and now have 93 species for the
year.

Mammals seen included HARBOR SEAL and BLACK-TAILED DEER.

Until next week....
