Hi Tweeters,

On Saturday Bob Boekelheide and I went searching for the Red-faced Cormorant
that was seen near the Salt Creek Recreation Area west of Port Angeles last
week but dipped. We did, though, find a first-cycle Kumlien's Iceland Gull
at the mouth of the Elwha River. There were about 250 gulls to scan through
and Bob pulled the Iceland out of the pack. Also in the group were Herring,
Thayer's, Mew and many "Olympic" gulls.

Photos of the Iceland Gull, and other birds from the weekend, can be seen in
the new photos folder on my website:

We did see four or five Pelagic Cormorants with white flank patches and
several Double-crested Cormorants with bright orange-red throat patches but
no Red-faced Cormorant.

Other highlights were singing Pacific Wren's at Salt Creek RA, Long-tailed
Ducks in Crescent Bay on the west side of the park, Black Scoters on the
north side of Ediz Hook in Port Angeles, and more Black Oystercatchers than
I have ever seen in one day.

Bob showed me an article he had copied about how to tell the sex of a Black
Oystercatcher (BLOY). Male BLOY had round irises. Females have odd-shaped
irises. You can see this in photos I have taken of BLOY:
