At one time it was recommended that all bird names in TWEETERS postings be done in all-caps, like I just did with Tweeters. It makes it easier for a person to scan a message for species of interest. Wilson Cady

I'm also an editor (of medical journal articles), so maybe this point will help: capitalized names are easier to attract the attention of the reader.
I find that capitalized bird names stand out better against the background print, and if an article mentions a bird I'm interested in then I'm more likely to want to read the full article.
