Subject: [Tweeters] Capitalization of bird names

Hi, Tweets

I promised I would not get pulled into this discussion, but it has
proved quite interesting. As a past editor of WOSNews (twice), I did
not capitalize bird names except of course the proper names such as
Steller's jay, etc. I was chastised a few times and my argument, at
the time, was that I had done a survey (the personal type) of various
magazines and journals and found that it was a sort of 50/50
dilineation of whether to capitalize or not. I was used to not
capitalizing and am wondering - since Bob Pyle and I both took
several courses from Frank Richardson years back at the same time and
he did not capitalize - whether we just took to his style at the time.

Anyway, if I write for a magazine such as Birder's World I use their
guidelines; for other writings I use what is suggested. In my own
stuff, I still don't capitalize. I figure I'm not alone out there
even though lots do disagree.

Cheers, Diann
