Yesterday (April 30) afternoon Steve Caldwell and I had two MOUNTAIN QUAIL along Canyon Road (Hurd Rd.), about 1/3 mi above the turn-off from North Shore Rd. in Mason County, between Belfair and Tahuya. Overall, they were much darker brown than the images in either the Sibley or the NatGeo field guides. Earlier in the day, we had 6-8 LONG-TAILED DUCKS scoped from the bluff at Port Gamble, several of which were in breeding plumage. We saw 1 WESTERN KINGBIRD (spotted by an unidentified birder) and perhaps 20 MARBLED MURRELETS in breeding plumage at Point No Point where, at around 10-11 am, many were very close to shore for great looks. We ran into Vic Nelson there and while we were admiring a small group of Orange-crowned Warblers near the point, he spotted a Caspian Tern flying by.
