Ed I've experienced this too with White-crowned Sparrows. Last year there was one in our neighborhood that sang, sporadically, well after dark. I looked forward to it on the nights I was slaving away at the computer. I would generally only here it once or twice if I listened between 10-11pm. It was always a pretty hardy song.
