Hi Tweeters,

Jeff Jendro got in some birding today (5/6/11) before the rain began in
earnest. Starting at the 1702 Dike Road hotspot we saw 3 BLACK-BELLIED
PLOVERS with a few DUNLIN and the county's FOY LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS. There
were still some BONAPARTE'S GULLS and a CASPIAN TERN present as well. Just
north of there and across the road a HOUSE WREN continues to sing. At
various places along the Columbia we saw a total of 12 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS.We
made a number of stops to check the trees between Dike Road and the river
and found the numbers of YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS down from last week with a
big pulse of WILSON'S WARBLERS there today as well as a few ORANGE-CROWNED,
YELLOW, and TOWNSEND'S WARBLERS. Also seen were our FOY WARBLING VIREOS and
a male WESTERN TANAGER.

As we swung around on Dike Road to follow the Lewis River upstream we came
upon a WESTERN KINGBIRD. At the shorebird spot along Kuhnis Road we added
SEMI-PALMATED PLOVER to the county yearlist with 4 birds present as well as
6 GREATER YELLOWLEGS and about 150 LEAST SANDPIPERS. From Kuhnis Road we
took a right (east) on Whalen Road across the railroad to just beyond the
pond on the south side we stopped and heard and saw a single CALIFORNIA
QUAIL scampering between blackberry brambles amid the oaks. This species has
gotten difficult to find here in recent years.

We took a walk at the Port of Kalama and found 3 HORNED LARKS and also saw 3
BANK SWALLOWS out over the Columbia. Later along Crocker Ave. at the Mint
Farm in Longview we saw a SOLITARY SANDPIPER in a small puddle near
Prudential Blvd. Since we had seen numerous KILLDEER at a variety of places
this was a 9 shorebird species outing which has to rank as one of my best
ever in shorebird poor Cowlitz County.
