Subject: [Tweeters] osprey nest

Hi All,

Sorry I didn't respond to this thread sooner, but I get the digest version of Tweeters here at work. I'm pretty sure the "Osprey-snatching" incident that was witnessed on Thursday was actually the Osprey rescue that one of my fellow PAWS staff members performed. The bird's leg had become wedged in between two metal plates on the tower and Someone from a nearby business called both PAWS and American Tower (the company that maintains the tower) for assistance. Cindy (our wildlife admissions staff member) met the American Tower employees at the site and they provided a bucket truck to get her and a tech (that arrived in a vehicle that said Wren Construction on the side) up to the bird. They freed the Osprey from the tower, but the bird had injured his legs while he was hanging there. Cindy placed the Osprey in a box (not a bag) and transported him to PAWS. He is currently at our wildlife center and under veterinary care.

Cindy said that the American Tower representatives were very positive about the Osprey using the tower. They mentioned that they thought the old nest had been dislodged during a wind storm, but the birds were in the process of rebuilding.

Anyway, I hope this clears things up about the alleged Osprey abduction!

Legal removal of nests from cell phone towers is not uncommon, when it
occurs before eggs or young are present. But, the adult being stuffed in a
bag is really strange and not something you'd expect to be authorized by
state and federal agencies.

I would also contact the owner of the Cell Tower, there should be a number
posted on a sign by the tower. This may have been authorized for safety
reasons, but that would seem strange if the nest has been in place for that
many years already.
