Subject: [Tweeters] a migrant!

Hello, tweets.

I should have known that as soon as I wrote about the lack of migrants in our yard, one would fly in just to prove me wrong. I didn't even know they subscribed to tweeters.

A beautiful Orange-crowned Warbler of our breeding subspecies lutescens just appeared at the fountain (emphasizing the affinity of these birds for water). As that subspecies is generally an early migrant, it's a good indicator of how late the migration is this year. All the Orange-crowned Warblers I have seen in previous springs on or after this date have been of the duller subspecies celata, presumably heading much farther north, even to Alaska. I have previously seen lutescens from April 14 - May 8, celata from May 1-19.
