Subject: [Tweeters] Fill on Friday

Hey tweets, Blair Bernson reported quite a bit a recent raptor
activity at the Fill, despite the fact that winter is supposed to be
our big raptor season down here, not spring. On the other hand, who -
honestly - can call the season we're having right now spring? So maybe
it's not too surprising that winter-friendly birds are here.

The raptor rapture continued this morning with a fly-by PEREGRINE
FALCON swooping just past my head on its way to perch on a light
standard at the baseball diamond. A little while later, it flew down
to the snag at West Point, where it was pestered by some crows. The
falcon wanted to keep its eye on the crows and did so by swirling its
head around like it was on a ball socket. It's a wonder the poor
thing's head didn't unscrew itself completely and fall off.

There was also a Cooper's Hawk on the premises this morning, which may
explain why nearly every other bird except the ubiquitous Robins
stayed under cover. Very quiet day. I did get a brief look at a
beautiful male Western Tanager at Surber, but it did not stick around
to do more than a touch and go off a branch. If I were a tanager as
plump and juicy-looking as this one, I would have scrambled too. -
